Vintage German-style Christmas tree
Christmas tree decorations in German style may include angels and other traditional winter-inspired ornaments, silver tinsels, glass Christmas balls, straw ornaments, and sweets. A star or angel topper completes the vintage German-style Christmas tree. Germans used real lit candles on the trees, which can be dangerous, especially in homes with children.

The first known Christmas tree was set up in 1419 in Freiburg by the town bakers and decorated with fruits, nuts, and baked goods. First, evergreen branches inside houses were decorated with apples, nuts, and sweets. Later, candles were added to Christmas tree decorations. In areas with sparse forests, people built Christmas pyramids from sticks, then decorated them with fir branches. In small homes, Germans hung green branches from ceiling beams and set upside-down Christmas trees to save space.

By 1800, the custom of bringing a Christmas tree into the home was established in German-speaking regions and continued to spread throughout Europe and around the world. This Christmas tradition was brought to North America by German-speaking immigrants coming to Pennsylvania and Ohio in the 18th century.
