Tree base circles, also known as tree rings, are practical and attractive landscaping ideas. A landscaped area around the base of a tree trunk adds an interesting detail to yard landscaping while protecting the tree. A so-called “folly” can be a circular border beautifully decorated with mulch or different landscaping materials and plants. Tree circles define the root zone, enhance the overall look of a garden, and offer fabulous accents that beautify yard landscaping ideas.
A tree ring was introduced as a decorative feature in planned landscapes in Britain and Ireland during the 18th and 19th centuries. A tree ring enclosure around a tree base enhances visual appeal and creates a focal point in the landscape. It also serves a functional purpose. Tree circles protect tree bases and add a whimsical and romantic touch to garden designs.

Benefits of tree circles
Tree rings are an excellent protection. Tree circles help protect the tree’s base and root system from damage caused by mowing or foot traffic. They make garden designs look beautiful and neat. A tree ring creates a defined border around the base of a tree that is easy to decorate with beautiful flowers and small plants.

Disadvantages of tree rings
One of the largest disadvantages of a high tree ring is the amount of soil that comes into direct contact with the trunk of the tree. This can cause the tree bark to soften and decay because of excessive moisture.

How to create a perfect tree circle
1. To dig a circle around a tree, loop a rope around the tree trunk, and attach it to the shaft of a spade.
2. Adjust the length to a desired radius so that the spade reaches the desired distance from the tree.
3. Use the spade to mark the outline of a circle border. You can alter the shape as you desire by adding additional curves to a tree ring.
4. Remove the rope and dig down at the mark around the tree.
5. Remove the turf under the tree and cover the area with mulch or rocks.
6. Decorate the tree ring with flowers, small plants, or garden decorations.
