Recycling is an excellent way to create a hanging bench and add a decorative touch to your garden, porch, or room. A hanging bench made from salvaged wood is a brilliant way to save money while blending rustic charm with cozy functionality. Here is the Lushome collection of DIY benches suspended on metal chains and ropes from the ceiling beams. Also, you will find the practical tips for building a one-of-a-kind hanging bench that is perfect for your space.
Salvaged wood planks, old wooden furniture pieces, railings, or outdoor furniture that have lost legs are ideal for recycling and designing a new hanging bench. Heavy-duty rope or metal chain, designed for outdoor use, along with eye bolts or lag screws for securing the bench to a ceiling beam, stud finder, drill, saw, wood screws, wood glue, sandpaper, outdoor sealant, and paint, are all you need to create a hanging bench, in addition to your creativity, energy, and time.

How to design a hanging bench

First, you need to decide on materials, shape, and dimensions. A typical hanging bench measures approximately 48 inches in width, 18 inches in depth, and 16 to 18 inches in height. A quick sketch of a seat and backrest helps to organize your thoughts and see if you have enough salvaged wood to build the desired design.

Salvaged wood
The salvaged wood requires thorough cleaning and sanding, as well as the removal of nails and rotten parts. You only need sturdy, salvaged wood pieces to create rectangular frames for the bench seat and backrest. After adding the seat and backrest to the frames, prepare a bench for hanging on chains or ropes by drilling holes in each corner and installing bolts. You can loop the rope through holes or around the bench and secure the knot underneath. When hanging a bench, ensure it is leveled, and then test the furniture with the appropriate weight.

Bench decorating
You can paint your wooden hanging bench any color that matches your outdoor decor or garden design. Additionally, you can consider distressing wood to increase the beauty of your rustic design and emphasize its character. Also, you can mix wood tones or painted slats for a unique, patchwork look. To create a relaxing seat, add soft, colorful cushions or pillows for added comfort and appeal.
