Winter decorating with houseplants can add freshness and coziness to your living spaces. Winter is a difficult time for indoor plants. Constant room heating causes them to dry out, and the lack of sunlight leads to vitamin loss and leaf shedding. There are sun-loving plants and those that need abundant watering. Some plants drink little water. All these nuances need to be clarified when buying an indoor plant for your home. Lushome shares tips for growing healthy houseplants in winter, including universal advice on the most common problems.
Many plants suffer from a lack of moisture in the air, leading to their leaf tips drying out. To avoid this and enjoy beautiful green colors, you need to spray your indoor plants daily or get an air humidifier. However, there are plants whose leaves rot when water comes into contact with them. For such houseplants, it is better to place wet expanded clay, which will nourish the plant with moisture without causing rot.

Watering
Winter decorating ideas can be enlivened with greenery. The proper watering regime for each plant is the perfect solution. The winter period does not mean that you have to water indoor plants constantly. If the dry tips of a plant indicate that it is thirsty, then the darkened ones mean that there is too much water. Before watering a houseplant, use your finger to check the moisture level in the upper and middle layers. It is also critical to pay attention to the quality of the water you give your plants. It must be filtered, as tap water contains a high level of fluoride and boron, which can cause the plant to dry out.

Fertilizing
Most houseplants need fertilizers between May and October, as in winter they enter a state of dormancy. Even if indoor plants pause in growth, they still look beautiful, creating eye-catching accents for winter decorating. However, there are plants (orchids, violets, ficuses, decumbentes) that do not stop growing in winter, so it is important to nourish them. The proportion of top fertilizer should be carefully calculated, since the excess will not benefit the plant. Also, you should not use fertilizers more than once a month in winter, because the plant’s photosynthesis slows as daylight hours get shorter.

Lighting
Many plants that are not dormant in winter may lack sufficient light. Indoor plants need additional lighting if their leaves fade in color, the stems bend towards the light, or the leaves begin to fall off. Phytolamps or fluorescent lamps for plants offer excellent solutions. Artificial light should be placed at a 90° angle to the plant. If the plant is shade-loving, the lamp should be 55-60 cm high. If you have a light-loving indoor plant, you can place the lamp above it at 20-25 cm. It is necessary to turn on the lighting for several hours a day so that daylight and night are in equal proportion, since plants undergo processes essential for life during the dark period.
