This modern house features a biophilic design, providing an oasis-like home that is sunny and warm. Envisioned by architect Mark Shaw of Studioshaw, the 1,453-square-foot Catching Sun House re-imagines a former garage, transforming the space into a bright, nature-connected, contemporary home that blends indoors and outdoors. Modern living room furniture, colorful accents, abstract art, and houseplants create a beautiful space overlooking a small garden through large windows.
The house is surrounded by greenery on all sides. Modern interiors are open to sunlight. The home’s layout circles around three courtyards, giving a distinct character to the house design. Green plants in the first small garden maximize the flow of warmth and winter sunlight. The second green space is designed to promote biodiversity and showcase the splendid beauty of lush greenery. A third garden serves as a transitional corridor, enhancing the charming appeal of biophilic house design.

Large windows and sheer curtains allow abundant natural light to flood in, opening up to the sky and the surrounding greenery. Gardens create a natural connection between architectural interiors and plants. The award-winning landscape designer Charlie Hawkes developed a planting scheme that enhances biodiversity and invites nature into every corner of the modern house.

Biophilic house design enhances modern architecture, as garden views enhance the interior design, and natural light streams into home interiors through strategically placed openings and skylights. Natural interior design materials, including timber, exposed concrete, and aluminum, create a modern mix of textures that offer tactile experiences complementing the surrounding green space.
